Tang 618-907AD

Description: A Tang dynasty (618-907AD) fine equestrian hunting figure. The Central Asian rider naturalistically modelled with a stern expression, arms raised to hold the horses reins and seated with a saddle over a saddle cloth with a dog seated behind. The red pottery horse standing four square with the mane of originally organic material now gone, the head strongly modelled with bulging eyes, flaring nostrils and open mouth. A similar group was unearthed from the tomb of a Tang dynasty official and his wife on the outskirts of Xi'an in Shansi province. See Connoisseur magazine, summer 1996 'Pottery mounted horses' pp16-27. 37cm x 41cm. An Oxford thermoluminescence test carried out on 15th October 2012 authenticates this item as between 900 and 1500 years old. The certificate forms part of the purchase. (No posting, collection or delivery only). (CA9)
Condition: Intact
